Playing Ball with Dr. King

I am not sure if this has been discussed in other areas of the country but locally I have seen that people have been questioning why high school basketball games are being played on Martin Luther King day.

I was surprised to even hear this questioned but I guess I should not have been. For everything there is always going to be someone who has a question to ask. In Maine most high school basketball teams do not play this week on the calender as the schools are having Mid Terms. Monday, therefore, becomes a way to get a game in without taking kids away from studying.

I have seen some folks say that it disrespects the Doctor to play a sporting event on his day. That is just silly. I believe the NBA plays on that day, and the NBA is predominantly played by African American players.

I do not have a real issue with good people having different opinions. Still when folks make the argument, as I have seen, that it disrespects Dr. King they forget that the Monday of the Basketball tournament each year is played on George Washington's birthday.

This is a non issue. I just do not see it as one. One of the issues that troubles our society today is that everyone is just too damn sensitive.
