Newt Gingrich has become the vampire of the Republican Party. He cannot be killed. In Iowa Mitt Romney's SuperPac spent about five million to destroy Gingrich's once big lead. It worked.
Still no matter how much Romney works at it he cannot make the party faithful embrace him. He won the New Hampshire primary but as I have written before any interpretation of that as meaningful is overblown. He was the Governor of Massachussets right across the border after all.
This last two week period as the candidates worked for votes in South Carolina Romney became, seemingly, more and more tone deaf. Over the last few weeks Romney has said that he likes to fire people, tried to make a ten thousand dollar bet, refused to release his tax returns, and made an offhand comment that the money he made giving speeches was not that much. Reporters quickly did the math and stated that the money he had made giving speeches over the last year was well over $300,000, certainly not an amount that the average person would call not much.
Couple that with Romney's constant flip flop and honestly the fact that he is not likable as a candidate and you have Gingrich. Gingrich himself has more baggage than your mother in law on a family trip. He is however a very smart man. He is true to himself. He is an excellent debater. There has been some speculation that if Romney and Gingrich continue the fight this could go to the convention and that, possibly, in a brokereed convention anyone could emerge.
The one thing we do know is that Mitt Romney is in serious trouble.
